Hi everyone, Ellie here from Sinclair & Rush with another blog! If you work in the manufacturing industry like I do, you’ll know it’s always evolving. With innovation comes opportunity—but also challenges. That’s why we recently asked what you think is the biggest issue facing manufacturing right now, and your responses gave us a lot to think about.

Here’s what you told us in our latest poll:

Poll Question:
What do you consider the most pressing issue currently faced by the manufacturing industry?

  • Labour Shortages – 30%

  • Supply Chain Disruptions – 25%

  • Rising Costs – 25%

  • Technological Integration – 10%

  • Regulatory Compliance – 10%

The split responses show just how complex the current manufacturing landscape is. Let’s take a closer look at each issue:

🔧 Supply Chain Disruptions

Ongoing issues—especially post-Brexit and post-COVID—have left many manufacturers struggling to source essential components. In fact, 57% of UK manufacturers have faced delays or shortages (CIPS). Even the best-planned production lines have been thrown off course.

👷 Labour Shortages

81% of manufacturers say they’re struggling to recruit skilled workers (Make UK). As older generations retire and fewer people enter the trades, the skills gap is becoming one of the industry's biggest long-term challenges.

💸 Rising Costs

Inflation is hitting everyone hard, but manufacturing has seen particular pressure, with input costs rising by 14.7% year-on-year (ONS). Raw materials, energy bills, and transport costs are all climbing, forcing businesses to rethink pricing and efficiency.

🤖 Technological Integration

While 58% of UK manufacturers are increasing digital investment (PwC), 45% say they struggle to integrate new technologies with existing systems. It’s a fine balance between staying ahead and staying operational.

📋 Regulatory Compliance

With ongoing changes to trade and environmental regulations, 70% of manufacturers (BSI) say keeping up with compliance is a major concern. It’s a heavy administrative load on top of everyday operations.
