Fixxon identified a gap in the market for a simple, reusable laundry tagging solution, aimed at care homes and residential institutions for the identification of clothing. What makes their system stand out is its unique attachment method—a feature that also presented significant design and manufacturing challenges when developing an injection moulded product at high volumes.
Founder Grant first approached Sinclair & Rush with a 3D concept and accompanying drawings, seeking to bring his idea to life. One of the key challenges was achieving an exceptionally smooth finish, which required tooling that left no visible fill-points or knock-out pin marks on the product’s surface. Additionally, materials were extensively tested to endure the demanding laundry process, including exposure to high-temperature dryers.
"From the very beginning, when we knew very little about plastic manufacturing, they helped us explore different processes to achieve our objective on a very limited budget. Over the years, with their knowledge and support, we have managed to develop our product from a concept into a mass-produced item we are truly proud of!" – Grant, Business Owner
To ensure a perfect fit, maintaining tight tolerances was essential. As the product evolved, so too did the tooling and manufacturing techniques. For the latest version of the 'button', new material additives were introduced to improve contrast during laser etching—allowing residents’ names to be added directly to the button and eliminating the need for separate labels, further reducing the overall size.
The Design Engineers at Sinclair & Rush demonstrated a clear understanding of the product’s intended application, investing considerable time in R&D to support Fixxon’s vision. The buttons are now produced in the UK, allowing for quick turnaround and responsiveness to fluctuating demand. Under the Identitags brand, these innovative tagging solutions are now also being used in schools across the country.
"S&R have been very much part of the journey, and it feels like a partnership. They take the time to understand our requirements and goals, and work collaboratively to achieve them. They’re always committed to delivering excellent service, consistently going above and beyond to meet our needs." – Grant, Business Owner
